What Makes Award Engraving Look Premium?
Premium award engraving starts with deep sand etching, clean artwork, readable type, balanced spacing, and color fill used only when it adds something to the design. The source artwork and the way it’s prepared matter just as much as the etching itself.
If you want award engraving to look premium, start with deep sand etching and give the design enough room to breathe. Sharp vector artwork, readable lettering, and balanced spacing keep the logo and message crisp rather than crowded. Color fill can help when it supports the brand, but natural sand etching remains our most popular finish.
Start with deep sand etching
Deep sand etching removes material from the crystal, creating recessed lettering and logo details that catch the light. You can see and feel the depth, unlike the flatter appearance of typical surface laser marking.
We’ve refined our deep sand-etching technique over three decades. Even so, the result still depends heavily on the quality of the starting artwork and how carefully it’s prepared. The etching process alone can’t fix a poor-quality logo file.
Give us the cleanest logo file you have
Vector line artwork in AI or EPS format is preferred because it preserves sharp edges, thin lines, and accurate logo details. If you don’t have a vector file, send the highest-resolution version available. Our artwork team can review it and prepare the production-ready design.
Free expert art design services are included with every order, so you don’t need to rebuild the artwork yourself before contacting us.
Keep the message readable
Clear block-style fonts usually etch more cleanly and are easier to read through transparent crystal. Our artwork team prefers text of at least 12 points, but that’s a design preference, not an absolute production minimum.
Script and cursive fonts aren’t automatically unusable. They simply need more care because fine strokes and small lettering can lose clarity.
Leave room around the logo and text
Trying to fit a large logo, recipient name, award title, date, and long message into a small area usually makes the award look busy. Enough space around each element makes the engraving easier to read and the finished piece look more polished.
The right layout depends on the award’s size, proportions, and available etching area. Our artwork team reviews each design rather than applying one spacing rule to every award.
Use color fill with a purpose
Color fill can be added to etched areas when it supports the logo or helps distinguish award levels. Gold, silver, and bronze are the most requested options, while natural sand etching remains the most popular finish overall.
Stock palette colors can often come close to company colors. Exact PMS or Pantone matching is possible more often than not on applicable custom projects, but it must be reviewed and approved for the specific order. Learn more about using company brand colors in custom awards.
Judge the whole award, not just the lettering
Good engraving works best when the award itself has the right clarity, weight, and proportions for the message. A clean layout can’t make up for a shape with too little etching area. In the same way, an impressive crystal piece can be let down by crowded personalization.

Frequently asked questions
Is sand etching better than laser engraving for crystal awards?
For a premium crystal award, we recommend deep sand etching because it creates recessed detail with more visible depth than typical surface laser marking. The final quality also depends on strong source artwork and careful preparation.
What file format is best for an engraved logo?
Vector line artwork in AI or EPS format is preferred for sharp edges, thin lines, and brand accuracy. If that isn’t available, send your best file and our artwork team will review and prepare it for production.
Is 12-point text required for award engraving?
No. Twelve-point text is our artwork team’s general preference for legibility, not an absolute production minimum. The award size, font, and amount of text all affect what will work.
Can script fonts be engraved on crystal awards?
Sometimes, but we try to avoid script and cursive fonts when small details could become hard to read. Clear block-style fonts usually produce a sharper, more legible result.
Can etched engraving include company colors?
Yes, color fill can be added when it suits the project. Stock colors may approximate a brand color, while exact PMS or Pantone matching on applicable custom work requires project-specific review and customer approval.
